KASHUŪ
Japanese Artist & Calligrapher
London-based Japanese artist and calligrapher KASHUŪ has pursued the lifelong practice of Japanese calligraphy for over four decades, refining both mind and expression through disciplined practice.
Beginning her training at the age of six, she was awarded the title of Master at the age of eighteen. The following year, she attained the highest rank of Professor from The Japan Calligraphy Foundation, together with her professional artist name, KASHUŪ.
Rooted in centuries of Japanese calligraphic tradition, her practice extends beyond paper into live performance, moving image and large-scale installations. Working across disciplines, she explores the dialogue between tradition and contemporary visual culture through ink, space and movement.
Her work has led to collaborations with leading international brands and cultural institutions, including Louis Vuitton, Armani, Mastercard, the Emmy Award-winning Disney+ series SHŌGUN, the Saudi Arabia Pavilion at Expo 2025 Osaka, the Royal Botanic Gardens, Kew, and Ueshima Coffee Company, among others.
Her artist name, KASHUŪ, means a refined bush clover—a slender yet resilient plant admired for its quiet strength and understated elegance. It reflects the philosophy that continues to shape both her life and artistic practice.
Through each project, KASHUŪ seeks to create works that invite stillness, presence and human connection, allowing one of Japan’s oldest art forms to find new expression in the contemporary world.
Calligraphy is her life-long practice to train and purify the mind. The age-old tradition is a discipline of beauty, a search towards pure form and a peace within.
